Summer is a perfect season for learning through play. At SCA Childcare, we encourage experiences that spark curiosity and build essential skills. That is why we’ve put together the top 5 EYFS activities for summer.

Each one is simple, adaptable, and aligned with the Early Years Foundation Stage. Whether you are a parent or provider, these ideas support joyful learning both indoors and outdoors.

Top 5 EYFS Activities for Summer: Ice Cube Colour Mixing

Explore Science Through Play

To start, fill ice cube trays with coloured water and freeze them overnight. Next, place the cubes on a tray outside and let children mix them as they melt.
You can ask, “What colour will these two make together?” or “Which cube is melting faster?”.

  • Literacy
  • Knowledge of the Natural World

Top 5 EYFS Activities for Summer: Water Painting on Pavement Mixing

What it supports:

  • Fine Motor Skills
  • Critical Thinking
  • Social Interaction

Top 5 EYFS Activities for Summer: Summer Story Picnic

Read, Relax, and Connect

Lay out a picnic blanket in a shady spot and bring a few favourite books. Read together and ask questions like “What happens next?” or “How does this character feel?” Afterwards, children can act out the story or draw their own ending.

What it supports:

  • Communication and Language
  • Personal, Social, and Emotional Development

Many of the families and providers we support ask similar questions when it comes to summer planning and EYFS activities. Here, we’ve answered a few of the most common ones to help you feel more confident and prepared.

Most of the activities suit children aged 2 to 5. However, they can easily be adapted for other age groups too.
